The Institute of Housing Management is an organization by, for and about Property Managers and property management. We came into being, at the request of government, to meet an identified need, and have worked hard to ensure that we continue to meet developments within the profession. For a number of years, Property Managers engaged in the management of rental housing units were conscious of their lack of status and professionalism. These concerns were recognized by senior levels of government, and a feasibility study was initiated. This study confirmed the need for a professional organization and resulted in the establishment of the Institute of Housing Management, which was incorporated on January 16, 1976. The members of the steering committee, at their initial meeting, unanimously endorsed the concept of the formation of a professional association, with appropriate standards set for eligibility for membership and accreditation. In 1987, the IHM Board of Directors undertook the major task of reviewing its accreditation process and the aims and objectives of the Institute. The original concept was subsequently modified to reflect the changing needs of the industry and to allow for a broader industry scope which would include those employed in commercial, industrial and institutional property management as well as those in the residential rental property management industry.
